(Same procedure generally applies to Renault Clio II, Kangoo I, Safrane I Phase 2 with small design differences)
Safety Precautions
- Switch off the ignition and remove the key
- Engage the parking brake
- Wear protective gloves and eyewear
- Keep metal tools away from battery terminals
- Avoid fire and smoking near the battery
Tools/Materials Needed
- New car battery (correct size/spec for Duster 1)
- Wrench/spanner set (usually 10 mm)
- Terminal cleaning brush (optional but recommended)
- Battery terminal grease (optional, prevents corrosion)
Procedures
- Open the hood locate the battery in the engine compartment.
- Disconnect the negative terminal
Loosen the clamp on the black battery cable (marked “–”) and move it aside to avoid accidental contact. - Disconnect the positive terminal
Loosen the clamp on the red cable (marked “+”) and secure it safely away from the battery. - Remove any retaining clamp or bracket holding the battery in place.
- Lift and remove the old battery
Use both hands and proper lifting technique. The battery is heavy. - Clean the battery tray and terminals
Optional but recommended: remove any corrosion or debris. - Place the new battery into the tray
Ensure it is positioned correctly and aligned with terminals on the correct side. - Secure the retaining clamp or bracket to keep the battery stable.
- Reconnect the positive terminal (+)
Tighten firmly to ensure a solid electrical connection. - Reconnect the negative terminal (–)
Tighten securely. - Close the hood and ensure it is latched properly.
- Start the engine
Confirm all electrical systems (radio, lights, windows) function correctly.
Helpful Tips
- Clean terminals before reconnecting to remove green powdery corrosion
- Reset time and radio presets if necessary after reinstalling
- Always connect positive first when installing, negative first when removing
- Check dashboard clock, radio and windows after replacement, as they may reset
- After installation, start the engine to ensure everything wakes up happily
- Apply terminal grease to prevent future corrosion
- Check battery voltage periodically if the vehicle is not driven often
⚠️ Warning Notes
- Never reverse terminal connections (positive to negative)
- Do not let tools bridge the two terminals simultaneously
- If warning lights remain on after replacement, scan vehicle electronics
